I don't often have time to play for challenges, but this week I already had an idea I had been wanting to try. this week over on the City Crafter Challenge Blog, the challenge is "Hold It". The challenge is to make or re-do a container. so don't you think what I chose to re-purpose is fun?
I have seen snowmen painted on glass and used for candle holders, but I am not too good with snowmen, so I decided that I would make a Santa, since I have been painting them for years. I have some inexpensive glasses that haven't been used in years. Just plain ordinary glass. I took one and covered it with a thin layer of ModPodge then added crumpled tissue paper to the outside surface, including the foot top. I let this dry and started to paint, adding layer after layer. Once all that dried, I added more paint. I just used the small bottles of Acrylic paints from the hobby stores. With all the paing I applied I had to let it sit overnight. Can you see that the second one looks cloudy!
This morning I added more crumpled tissue paper for a moustache, applying liberal amounts of ModPodge and more around the top of the hat. I added more MP and glitter to the edges that you see. I glittered the candle and set it on the base I found an old bell, tied bakers twine in a double bow and placed it on top with some sequins. the bell was full of sequins that I ahd to pry out before it would jingle! the rest of the surface was all coated. I let it dry enough to take this picture as the post is already later than I wanted it to be!
All the texture you see on the glass is just paint. I love thick paint as it acts almost like modeling paste. A glass went from holding beverage to holding a candle, love it! This Santa is going on my mantle today, otherwise if I leave it down, Tigger jr. might decide to play with it. Last night, before I went to bed I heard some thumps that I did not know where they came from or what it was. It was Tigger, he had taken a small (3" in length)wooden duck from the window in the computer room, knocked it onto the table then the floor and came carrying it into the living room before he dropped it and started playing with it. It never ceases to amaze me what he thinks might be a great toy! Have a beautiful Sunday. We went from 32 last week to 79 yesterday and today is already 82!
